1999 Change

Chick Corea & Origin’s simply titled this release Change, exemplifies a super-band’s continual exploration of its identity within the live, natural context. Change is their second release on Stretch Records and their debut studio recording.Their first release Origin has its roots in a series of particularly inspired jam sessions. The sextet, comprised of bassist Avishai Cohen, trombonist Steve Davis, saxophonists Steve Wilson and Bob Sheppard and drummer Adam Cruz.
Change brings Origin one step closer to Corea's conception of a dream ensemble, a group of musicians unusually attuned to each other's playing, united under the like-minded goal of bringing to life the music of a leader able to compose and arrange challenging material with specific instrumental voices in mind

Chick Corea & London Philharmonic
Orchestra - Feat. Origin

Spain" is probably Chick Corea's best-known composition. Written in 1971, it was first introduced by his Return to Forever band and played frequently by many other Corea-led groups, including his 1988 Akoustic Band trio. Here it appears again — and arguably, for all time — in a powerful, extended form through the efforts of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Steven Mercurio, Corea, and five other members of the group Origin. Combining the sounds of Spain, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, and New York with a whiff of Gershwin and Ravel full of whispers and thunder, Corea's arrangement won the 2000 Grammy. "Spain" is divided into a nine-minute introduction, 11 minutes of theme statement and improvisation, and a magnificent conclusion, weaving classical and jazz elements together in the tune's ultimate fulfillment. The second Corea composition on this CD, his "Piano Concerto No. 1," was supposedly modeled after the style of Mozart, although Wolfgang never had this much fire and passion. With Corea on piano, Origin veterans Avishai Cohen on double bass and Jeff Ballard on drums fronting the Philharmonic, the concerto contains over 30 minutes of musical textures, with beautifully melodic piano interludes and a recurring Latin pulse. This is the kind of intricate, multi-layered CD that sparkles brighter with each hearing; the "Spain" arrangement alone is worth the price of admission. All told, it's more evidence of Corea's restless and brilliant talent; fans who've followed his winding artistic path for decades may well see this CD as a clear monument, if not a peak.

Chick Corea & Origin - Live at the blue note

This live album from piano extrodinare Chick Corea will bring your speakers to life. Each song glistens with talent, not only from Corea but from every member of the band. The complex, soulfull drumming of Adam Cruz stands out particularly. The sweeping "Double Image" keeps the listener fascinated for it's entire 17 minute running time, as practically every musician in the bands solos. And the remake of "It Could Happen to You" is also well worth mention (all 7 tracks are worth mention, for that matter). I highly recommend this cd to anyone, whether they're seasoned jazz afficianados, or new to the genre. You won't be dissapointed

Mr Corea has tried to reproduce on these 6CD's the sonic experience of actually being at the club BLUE NOTE to hear his band ORIGIN - thus no overdubbing, editting, minimal equalisation and so on. Technically, there should be no quibbling about the quality of the recording and the sound image of the band - even the faint sound of someone's mobile phone ringing is not a distraction. Most of the works are originals but there are three tunes by Mr Thelonious Sphere Monk, whilst Mr Miles Davis, Mr Charles Parker, Msrs Rodgers and Hart and Msrs Van Heusen and Bourke are represented by one tune each.
Naturally there is plenty of space for extended solos and some tunes are played a number of times. An interesting case in point is MATRIX first performed by the then 26 year old Mr Corea on the excellent NOW HE SINGS NOW HE SOBS and reprised here three times, once at 19 minutes, once at 23 minutes and once at 13 minutes. Also intriguing and interesting is the band's theme SAY IT AGAIN which seems a free improvisation which I would have liked to have heard in extended form. Overall though, this acoustic band provides a relaxed and swinging programme of music with a very high degree of musicianship. Good value for money which is graced by some attractive abstract art originals by Mr Corea.Review On Amazon.com

2001 - The Chick Corea New Trio - Past, Present & Futures

Putting Origin on the shelf for a moment, Chick Corea sets about getting intimate with the band's rhythm section on this invigorating trio release. Corea also takes this opportunity to premiere 10 entirely new compositions as well as a lively reading of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz." Together with the phenomenal Avishai Cohen on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums, Corea continues with the kind forward-thinking acoustic jazz that has made Origin so appealing over the last several years. The opening minor blues, "Fingerprints," strongly recalls his first classic trio with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes. "Rhumba Flamenco," "Anna's Tango," and the closing "Life Line" are typical of the Spanish-tinged lexicon he's been developing since early on, but most recently with Origin and Gary Burton
If anything, Corea's new music is more heavily composed than usual. Its involved, tightly executed passages evoke a sort of chamber-jazz feel that brackets relatively short episodes of fiery, free-flowing improvisation. But "The Chelsea Shuffle" and "Cloud Candy" open up a bit more, while "Nostalgia" changes the pace with its mellow, semi-classical feel
.
Like Pat Metheny, who recently formed a trio with Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart, Corea recognizes the importance of forming deep associations with the new generation of jazz greats. Of course, Avishai Cohen and Jeff Ballard gain enormous prestige through their work with Chick. But Chick also keeps himself fresh and on his toes by working with these younger stalwarts.
