Yemen blues is an original and a fascinating meeting between the traditional Yemenite melodies & the world of blues, jazz and funk. The flavors of the West African music roots and the enhanced modern compositions are bringing together a breathtaking experience mixture of beautiful complex grooves. Yemen Blues was founded by Ravid Kahalani, a talented singer who grew up to a traditional Yemanite family, learned the language and the traditional chants of his origin, and extended his influences in the areas of blues & west African soul, from the Sahara desert, thru the classical Opera singing to the Afro American blues. Ravid joined forces with Omer Avital, a well known bass player and compositor, and togehter they gathered 'Yemen Blues', a supergroup of top musicians from New york, Israel and Uruguay. Yemen Blues concerts are the ultimate celebration of African grooves, a pure happiness & deep emotion Yemenite singing, a new music experience and innovative sound.

 unexpectedly but most impressively reverts to acoustic jazz for his Spring 2011
 European tour. Due to the unavailability of Itamar Doari, Avishai returns to
 the trio format of "Gently Disturbed" with, on the kit drums, Amir Bresler who
 debuted on Amos Hoffman's 2010 CD "Carving" before playing with the quintet in
 Brussels and Juan Les Pins in July 2010. Although Bresler did not feature in
 last autumn's radio concerts at TSF and NDR promoting the forthcoming CD, he
 comes to the fore in this stripped-down jazz trio. His sensitivity - ranging
 from the most discrete of cymbal taps to the thunder of extended drum solos -
 would be impressive in a drummer of any age; to have hit it so young is
 jaw-dropping. The small venue made Huy the most intimate of concerts with
 Avishai in fine form, ending up rolling on his back on the floor, bass on top
 of him, as he hammers out the closing notes of Shalom. One thing you can be
 sure of - the trio enjoyed this gig as much as the audience did. With several
 unreleased tracks and with those drawn from previous CDs being given a
 radically different treatment, this recording is a unique discovery for any

"Aurora finds Avishai Cohen not only playing acoustic and electric bass, but also playing acoustic piano and electric keyboards and singing. In fact, he does a great deal of singing on this 2008 recording -- which will come as a surprise to those who think of Cohen as strictly an instrumentalist. Aurora is by no means an easy album to categorize; at the risk of oversimplifying things, one possible description could be "world jazz meets post-bop meets adult alternative." Jazz is a prominent ingredient on Aurora, but so are pop/rock and world music -- and Cohen gets a lot of inspiration from Middle Eastern, North African, and Spanish music. He sings in four different languages -- Hebrew, English, Ladino (the language of Spain's Sephardic Jews), and Spanish -- on an album that is dominated by original material but also contains some traditional Jewish songs. But as unpredictable as this 53-minute CD is, Aurora has a certain continuity. Richard Galliano & Tangaria Quartet - Live in Marciac (2006)

Live In Marciac 2006 is a fiery, foot-on-the-accelerator mix of valse musettes, straight-ahead jazz, tunes derived from European and South American folk songs, a handful of tangos and a splash of the classics. It's physical, attacking music, and it pauses to catch its breath on just two tracks (the wistful, elegiac "Spleen" and the prettily balletic "Sanfona").
Six of Luz Negra's fourteen tracks were previewed at Marciac, along with another eight tracks which weren't included on the studio disc. Mandolinist Hamilton De Holanda again guests, and the five tracks featuring him are, as on the studio album, amongst the highlights of the set.
The first twenty or so minutes of the gig, played sans De Holanda, are taken at rocket-fuelled pace, and are exciting enough, but the band is still feeling its way. Group passion and interaction take a quantum leap, coincidentally or not, with De Holanda's entrance on the appropriately titled valse musette "Fou Rire" (literally, uncontrollable laughter), which builds from Galliano's unaccompanied introduction into a collective force-ten gale. "Sertao," which follows, ups the temperature further, with the De Holanda's wild picking paying more than a nod to American bluegrass.
De Holanda's contributions are epic, but Galliano and violinist Alexis Cardenas are formidable too, both as individual soloists and as a hard-driving front line rhythm section. When Cardenas lets loose extended bursts of forceful, staccato, rapid-fire notes, as he frequently does, propelled by Galliano's thumping chords, the two players give the music an intoxicating, dervish-like intensity.
There are just three down-the-line tangos, Galliano's opening "Tango Pour Claude" (all but five tunes are originals) and the familiar Astor Piazzolla warhorses "Libertango" and "Escualo," the former given an exuberant seeing to by Galliano's unaccompanied accordion. Luz Negra's classical moment, a delicate reading of Erik Satie's "Gnossienne," is replaced by the J.S. Bach-derived "Traditionnel Venezuelien," a showcase for Cardenas.
An exhilarating set from start to seventy-two minute finish. Galliano writes in the liner notes that Marciac 2006 was "one of the most beautiful concerts of my life." For once, that doesn't sound like sales-savvy hyperbole.

YIN YANG was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
Like Pastorius, Clarke, and Patitucci before him, Victor Wooten is on a quest to take the electric bass to a new level of consciousness. As anyone who has heard him play can attest, he has more than enough talent to do just that. His third solo release, the double-disc YIN-YANG, displays all of his many talents including his exceptional vocal abilities. The styles covered here are almost too numerous to name: jazz, funk, fusion, R&B, blue grass, avant-garde, and more. Wooten handles them all expertly and sometimes all at the same time. His many stellar guests include saxophonist Kirk Whalum, banjo master Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews' drummer Carter Beauford, as well as the hopelessly funky Bootsy Collins and his endlessly entertaining 16-month-old daughter Kaila. The results are an incredibly creative collection from a tremendously talented virtuoso.

Ahh, cohesion. Without it, music nearly always suffers. Without it, music is just a series of moments strung together at random. When I get a new album and I find that it’s as cohesive as the new Estradasphere is, I generally tend to be very happy. But this is Estradasphere we’re talking about here. Their charm is (or, rather, was) their ability to string things together that totally don’t belong and make it work. Their first two albums were fantastic amalgams of just about any genre you could imagine. And they weren’t just limited to one genre per song. In some cases there were five, six, or more genres in a single tune. Absent of reason, the pure energy and craziness drove their music to greater levels than Mr. Bungle or any other previous genre benders. But now, 2003 has brought us Quadropus and there’s no sense beating around the bush; it’s a bit of a let down. It certainly has its high points, but it’s missing something. Something important. That would be the pure, unadulterated zaniness of Estradasphere’s past. The album’s high points are probably more numerous than what I would truly call low points, and that’s a good thing. The songs Dubway, A Car Ride In Idealistic Ethiopia (Part 1), King Krab Battle, opener Mekapses Yitonisa, and the token epic Hardball, are all very enthusiastic, expertly crafted and executed, and simply fun. Dubway is entirely a capella, with heavy use of vocal effects, and beat-boxing. It’s a novelty, yes, but a unique and enjoyable one. A Car Ride… is probably my favorite song on the album. The James Bond/espionage vibe is cleverly arranged for various strings, sax, trumpet, and a number of different keyboard effects. It flows smoothly but is diverse enough to stay interesting. King Krab Battle is more of a mixed bag. It has an excessively boring three minute intro before the actual song rounds out the eight and a half minute piece. The intro is almost enough to make it not worth listening to, but the intense big band jazz feel in the actual song topped part of the time with heavy metal guitar playing is just great and wouldn’t have been out of place in one of the ultra ass-kicking fight scenes in the recent Kill Bill Vol. 1. Mekapses Yitonisa is a reworking of a traditional Greek song. It’s a joy to listen to from start to finish, beginning probably more in tune with what the Greeks had in mind and ending up a metal song with fast double bass and heavy riffing (but still with the same cool melody). Hardball mixes ethnic music with funk at times, forays into each individually and ends its nearly fourteen minute duration sounding like a mariachi piece. It’s a bit longer than necessary, but still manages not to grow tiresome. The rest of the album ranges from mediocre to downright not worth listening to. The two heaviest songs on the album, Jungle Warfare and Bodyslam, both have their charms, but are also somewhat annoying. Jungle Warfare features John Merryman of Cephalic Carnage on drums, and as always he delivers, but the song overall lacks anything to make it worth listening to very often. Bodyslam is a very funny song, making fun of both wrestling and tough guy NYC hardcore like Biohazard or Hatebreed. Bands like those definitely deserve to be made fun of and the song does serve its purpose, but it’s a bit too simplistic (aside from a well done guitar solo) considering what Estradasphere is clearly capable of. Speck isn’t a bad song, but it’s unfocused. It’s hard to tell what style they’re trying to achieve with it, but if I had to guess I’d say they were going for ballad. It’s alright if you can manage to get into it, and it does build quite a bit from its rather boring beginning, but not enough to save it from being mediocre. The two remaining songs are downright bad. Crystal Blue is a terrible rendition of 50’s rock. It sounds like Chuck Berry meets the Beach Boys but without the energy of either. At Least We’d Have Today is another pointless ballad made even more pointless by the fact that within it is almost a ten minute duration where there are less than six minutes of music. It has about two and half minutes of music followed by about two minutes of silence, repeated a few times. The bottom line on this one is that the strong points are enough to make it at least worthy of owning, but it’s far from up to par with Estradasphere’s two previous albums. The best thing I can say for it is that the musicianship is very good, especially considering the diversity of instruments played, so if that’s something you’re into, check it out.

In this new recording, composer Piris Eliyahu, an ethno-musician, a master of Middle-Eastern Music, a teacher and a Tar player, presents us with his lastest composition which was inspired by the Book of Psalms and was based on King David's psalms. Through tones of this musical composition, the composer has been trying to express the King's feelings, his spiritual mightiness, his faith, the way he himself senses it. In this creative search for the right tones which constitute the Psalms in the Biblical time, Piris Eliyahu has been experimenting in reviving the ancient musical and poetic forms, such as "Mizmor", "Tehilla" (Accolade), "Halleluya", "Shir HaMa'alot" (Song of the Virtues) and others. This Recording includes some of songs from his composition "Tehilim". While working on the ancient texts, the composer discovered a connection between the rhythm in the poetry of "Tehilim" and the emotional-modal system (Maqam), common among the nations of today's Middle-East. The musical formation is based on the roots of the classical Persian music and the instruments playing the music remind one of the musical instruments mentioned in the Book of Psalms: the Kamanch as the "Kinor" (voilin), the Tar, the Oud as the "nevel" (harp) and the Nay as the "Khalil" (flute).

Before the Music Dies (2006)

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. This is a great film. But more than that, it is an important film.
Before The Music Dies says a lot of the things many music fans have been thinking for years now. It also asks the single most fundamental question many of us have pondered over: Has the music industry abandoned both music fans--and more importantly, the musicians themselves--in the almighty name of commerce over actual art?
To find the answer, Andrew Shapter and his team travelled from coast to coast, speaking with fans, critics, and several musicians--ranging from household names like Eric Clapton and Elvis Costello--to a number of people you have never heard of (but in a number of cases, you should have). Academy award winner Forest Whitaker narrates.
In doing so, several of the villians you've come to know and hate are uncovered as expected. These include the usual suspects such as the huge, faceless radio conglomerates like Clear Channel and the tight, restrictive playlists such corporations ushered in. The way music videos forever changed the way we experience music by coloring in the images we previously were able to conjure ourselves--emphasing the flavor of the moment, and pretty faces that are discounted as fast as you can say Britney Spears--are also given ample examination.
And let us not forget the record companies who have replaced old school "record guys" cut in the mold of people like Columbia's great John Hammond and Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun, with corporate bean counters whose ties run far closer to Wall Street than they do to Abbey Road or Muscle Shoals.
I mean, it used to be about the music, man. Right?

Truth is, much of this ground has been covered before, and in great detail, most notably in books like Fred Goodman's great The Mansion On The Hill. Like that book's subtitle, this is a film dealing with the collision of music and commerce. But where that great book puts things in terms of both a historical perspective and what was at the time it was written, a warning--Before The Music Dies brings things full circle into the present day world of MP3 downloads and the like.
Rightfully so.

Before The Music Dies applauds the instant access to music that such former traditional delivery systems as the LP album and the cassette--and the soon to be extinct CD--have long since been put out to pasture by way of restricting what the mass audience is actually able to hear. My only complaint here is that it fails to likewise address the way that such instant access reduces music to more of a single song driven commodity, than it has ever been before. Wonderful thing that this technology is, the bottom line is that the guys running companies like Microsoft and Apple have even less of a connection to the music itself than their predecessors at places like Warner and Sony did.
What was that famous line from Pete Townshend about "meet the new boss, same as the old boss?"
Still, this is an absolutely fascinating, and dare I say it, important film. It is also one that asks all of the right questions at exactly the right time about whether we are going to surrender the art and the heritage of our music--and the culture it represents-- forever to some faceless, corporate monolith--whatever mask it chooses to wear. This is truly thought provoking stuff.

Of the artists interviewed--people like Erykah Badu, Dave Matthews, and Branford Marsalis--several things also stand out. Marsalis for example rightfully points out how Bruce Springsteen would have been "thrown out on his butt" by today's record companies after releasing several records sounding nothing like Born To Run.
Erykah Badu likewise puts things into the modern perspective of how todays artists better show up with their cleavage hanging out. This, from an artist who has done more to summon the ghost of Billie Holliday and out it in a modern hip-hop sort of perspective than anybody I can think of.
Before The Music Dies also introduces us to some great new artists I had previously never heard of. These include Doyle Bramhall II--who is championed by no less than Eric Clapton as the "real deal"--and Calexico, a band who combine some very nice atmospherics with a Spanish sort of flavor.

Ziryab Trio consists of Taiseer Elias (oud), Nassim Dakwar (violin) and Zohar Fresco (percussion). "Mashreq Classics" was recorded live in the Jerusalem Theater during the Israel Festival in June, 1995. In this concert, the Ziryab Trio was accompanied by Avraham Salman (kanun) and Emmanuel Mann (bass) from their joined band 'Bustan Abraham'.

"Ziryab was a musician in Haroun Al-Rashid's court in Baghdad (Iraq) in the 9th century. He was called the 'Black Bird' and was an extremely gifted singer, oud player and composer ... He founded a music school which made its way to the Magreb (North Africa) and he became a model for every aspiring musician in the centuries followed.
Taiseer Elias was born in the Israeli Arab village of Shfaram, Taiseer is the leading figure in classical Arabic music in Israel ... He holds a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the founder of the Orchestra of Classical Arab Music in Israel and is presently the director of the music department of the Israeli Public Radio in Arabic as well as musical director of various television programs."

Yaron Pe'er - Orian (2007)

Yaron Pe’er’s Debut Album, Orian, is a global collaboration of 25 esteemed musicians from countries including Sudan, Egypt, Israel and India. The album was created and recorded over the course of a year in the Sinai Desert, which Yaron calls “the land of believers.” The desert inspires the album, and its’ purity and clarity is offered to the listeners. Multi-instrumental Pe’er composed and arranged the music while performing vocals and playing the oud, sarangi, guitar, buzuki, saxophone, and the surmandal. Orian’s lyrics, which are mainly derived from Psalms and Song of Songs, are brought to life with vibrant Sudanese, Hindu, Greek, Egyptian and Kavkas melodies and instruments. Combining each spiritually rich tradition with the wisdom of the ancient kings of Israel creates a dialogue using the universal language of music. This dialogue elevates listeners to look beyond our differences and discover the common ground and universality among us. Radiant songs of praise for the Creator are juxtaposed with compositions that soothe the soul. Close your eyes while listening to these songs and you will feel as if in the spacious and peaceful surroundings of the desert.

Eyal Maoz's Edom - Hope And Destruction (2009)

The second release of New York-based Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz alt-klezmer quartet Edom is a schizophrenic one. On one hand, Maoz faithfully follows Tzadik founder John Zorn's hybridized post-modern pastiche of klezmer and Jewish musical traditions, and musical references that are typical of the label's Radical Jewish Culture series. This is most audible in the manner that Maoz adopts the angst and skronk style of Zorn's leading guitarist in his Jewish-related projects, Marc Ribot. On the other hand, this release represents Maoz's clear attempt to distance himself from Zorn's burdening heritage and articulate his own musical language, one that is rooted with Jewish/Middle-Eastern sounds, ironic and sometimes even a sarcastic. Unfortunately, he does not dare to go all the way.

Maoz is accompanied by an almost new quartet except for bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, a close musical partner since the days that Maoz led the Lemon Juice Quartet. The two other members of Edom are keyboardist Brian Marsella from Cyro Baptista's Banquet of the Spirits and drummer Yuval Lion, from another alt-klezmer outfit, Pharaoh's Daughter. This quartet cushions Maoz's inventive and thorny guitar playing but rarely pushes him or challenges him beyond the clear outlines of his compositions. Lion lacks the sophistication and elegance of Edom's original drummer, Ben Perowsky, or the manic aggression of other drummers that Maoz has collaborated with such as Kevin Zubek from the Lemon Juice Quartet or Asaf Sirkis, as evidenced by their recent Elementary Dialogues, (Ayler, 2009).

While Maoz and Marsella charge with a sweeping onslaught on tracks such "Tsi," "Messenger," and 'Skies"—suggesting an original and even competing vision to the post-modernist one of Zorn, almost in the same manner that Koby Israelite, another Tzadik's mainstay, does—Blumenkranz and Lion anchor them in a trite rhythmic formula that obscures Moaz's clever compositional ideas and the guitarist's telepathic affinity with Marsella. Tracks that flirt with soul-jazz and funkier forms such as "Slight Sun" or the Ennio Morricone-western themed "Eagle" and "Shell," or the ironic "King," dim Maoz's imaginative solo bursts and almost lose their infectious effect due to the bland drumming. No wonder that the most impressive composition here is the duet, "Down," featuring Maoz and Marsella, where Maoz explores his poetic guitar playing.

According to the liner notes, Hope and Destruction, was conceived as a mythically shaped apocalyptic tale pierced with bursts of sunlight. The skills of Maoz are not in doubt, even on such an unsatisfactory project, and hopefully his next project will offer a more cohesive insight into this gifted guitarist and composer.

Billed as a “song cycle”, it’s a collaboration with saxophonist/composer Gilad Atzmon and violinist/composer Ros Stephen, and accordingly credited to Wyatt, Atzmon, Stephen. It features a number of original Wyatt songs alongside standards such as ‘Round Midnight’ and ‘In A Sentimental Mood’. Domino Records, who will release For The Ghosts Within on CD, vinyl and digital on October 11, describe it as placing Wyatt’s voice “amid the seductive drama of string quartet, alto saxophone, and the universal rhythms of the night”.
Wyatt, who first rose to prominence in the late 1960s and ’70s as drummer with jazz-influenced proggers Soft Machine, has become one of Britain’s most distinguished and distinctive solo artists and collaborators. Much of his sprawling catalogue was recently reissued by Domino, including such classic albums as Rock Bottom (1974), Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975) and Cuckooland (2003).

Shye Ben-Tzur is an Israeli composer/ producer and performer who has been living, and creating in India for the last decade. His journey to the Indian sub continent has begun while searching for a Classical Indian music teacher and a guide. After years of studying Indian classical music in the traditional manner, Shye had felt the urge to compose music using his own language. His debut album Heeyam (Supreme love), was recorded in India, Israel, and USA. It was released in 2003, and earned great applause. In Heeyam Shye has worked with traditional Sufi Qawwali singers, (Qawwali is a form of ecstatic Muslim devotional music) who have been learning his compositions and poetry, and sung them in Hebrew. From his personal life experiences Ben-Tzur has succeeded to bring his own ancient culture alive into a unique cross cultural work. Besides working with the Qawwal communities across India, in the past few years shye has been collaborating with deferent folk musicians from the Rajasthan desert. His first collection of poems Souls expressions was published in 1999 in Israel A new book with a collection of his poetry “Love poems of worship” is soon to be published in Israel. In present days Shye is concluding the recording of his second album titled “SHOSHAN” That is to be release with Earthsync on 2009.

This is a brilliant debut album by London-based Israeli expat Koby Israelite. It feels more than appropriate that this is released on John Zorn's Tzadik label. With a talented ensemble of Israeli and British musicians, he smashes dozens of styles and genres together. Israelite creates not a new unified style, but instead a hip hop pastiche of Jewish identity and incredible music.

Opening with the bouncy "Saints and Dates", one gets the feeling of setting out upon an innocent excursion, perhaps some gentle lounge music or techno ahead. The transformation of the "Zemirot le Shabbat" following, establishes a different sense. Suddenly Middle Eastern and Ashkenazic melody meld. Followed immediately by a faux, satiric cantorial voice in "If that makes any sense" which alternates with heavy metal guitar reminiscent of Deep Purple, Israelite makes much sense. By treating each song as a "sample" of the world music around him, Israel is staking a claim to the vast territory that defines "Jewish", or at least, his musical world, some of which includes "Jewish," whatever that is.

This mix of British and Israeli music thoughts seems incredibly fertile in Israelite's hands (or programming fingers, as the case may be). "I used to be cool" mixes a French cafè ambience with electronica and interesting percussion before exploding into more urgent middle eastern and jazz rhythms. Slower, more meditative works such as "Battersea Blues" mix everything from the blues to a Middle Eastern desert feel, a feel enhanced by the scat middle eastern prayer melodies adn funk of "In the meantime".

It is rare that this sort of mixture works. Here it does. The mixture of genres, of sacred and profane, from heavy metal to nusakh shouldn't work, but it does, and the more one listens the deeper one goes. I haven't enjoyed a CD this innovative and this good in months. Along with the work of fellow Israeli Gilad Atzmon, one senses that something very interesting musically is happening in London. I'm going to keep enjoying this one for a long time, but I also feel eager for more, eager for more.

SUSSITA are an Israeli progressive folk band whose music is intended to be nostalgic and whimsical. The band's name is in reference to a short-lived Israeli-manufactured automobile by the same name, and pays tribute to an earlier and simpler time in Israeli society.

The band's music has been compared to other Israeli bands such as SHESHET and APOCALYPSE. The band also has ties to the symphonic rock band EGGROLL (drummer Gil Idan plays in both bands) as well as the fusion group SYMPOZION (bassist Dan Karpman is a member of that band).

SUSSITA's music is marked by flutes (often two of them) as well as accordion in addition to the more common band instruments. Their lyrics tend toward poetry pieces put to music, and are sung in Hebrew. The band is known for their sense of humor and showmanship in live shows.

That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated world music to new heights.

Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Swara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track. You can hear a lot of different types of music bouncing around the vibrant Tel Aviv nightclub scene – from tons of dance/electro pop to ‘beautiful Israel’ public sing-alongs to grungy alternative rock, all within walking distance from each other.

But not even experienced Tel Aviv scenesters weren’t prepared for a group that combines a piercing trumpet, Jack White-distorted guitar histrionics, ’70-styled funk and soul rhythms and a mess of facial hair. Never mind that all three members are brothers hailing from Mexico!

Forget that last part – The Ramirez Brothers are indeed the name of the band, but they’re not from Mexico and they’re not brothers. They’re just three talented Tel Aviv musicians with a penchant for shedding their shirts during their sweat-inducing performances. With songs sung in English that evolve into groove-based, howling jams, the band has gained a word-of-mouth following around the Tel Aviv area and are poised to break out beyond Israel’s borders soon.

“We thought it would be really cool to have stage names. And even though we’re not biological brothers, we are very close friends,” explained Sefi Ramirez (Zisling), the band’s trumpet player, who along with Uzi Ramirez (Feinerman) on guitar and vocals, and Eitan Ramirez (Efrat) on drums form the rather unorthodox trio, who effortlessly tackle an Americana mix of blues, funk, r&b and some Hendrix hysteria.

They’re no strangers to the Israeli music scene with Uzi handling guitar chores for Hadag Nahash and Sefi taking the solos for Funk’N'Stein and Yehudit Ravitz’s band. But The Ramirez Brothers is their passion and their baby, and their music offers a most exciting and seamless Israeli-American synthesis

So, the next time you unkowingly walk into a Tel Aviv club and suddenly think you’ve been transported to the American Deep South circa 1974, you’ll know that you’ve just stumbled upon The Ramirez Brothers. Don’t forget to say hi.

Israel-born, New York-based guitarist Eyal Maoz's debut release on Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series, Edom, is not officially part of the ever-multiplying series of tributes to the Masada songbook by Tzadik's founder and visionary, John Zorn. But in many ways, Maoz pays his respect here to the canonization of Zorn's new Jewish music, and even more so to a Zorn associate in many incarnations of Masada, guitarist Marc Ribot.
Maoz is the founder of the fusion-neo-klezmer Lemon Juice Quartet, which released three adventurous and eclectic releases (Visitor: Live, Self Released, 1999; Republic, Chant, 2001; Peasant Songs, Piadrum, 2002). The group's last release featured Maoz's arrangements of music by French composer Erik Satie and Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. The LJQ also performed a tribute to the Masada songbook on Voices in the Wilderness (Tzadik, 2003).

Edom features acoustic and electric bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, Maoz's associate since the formation of the LJQ, who is also a member of other new-klezmer outfits on Tzadik, such as Rashanim, Satlah, and Pharaoh's Daughter's Basya Schechter. John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin and Wood fame) has performed Zorn's Electric Masada on the B3 organ, and drummer Ben Perowsky recently recorded the Masada songbook with Jamie Saft's trio (Astaroth: Book of Angels, Vol.1, Tzadik, 2005) and has worked with Uri Caine, Dave Douglas, and Chris Speed.

Edom offers nine original tracks, all penned by Maoz. The best pieces are the ones that distance him from Zorn's legacy and the Masada songbook, such as the opening track, "Innocence," which features Maoz and Medeski raging and dense, playing fusion lines pushed by the tight and aggressive rhythm section of Blumenkranz and Perowsky. On the second part of "From There," Medeski's playing brings to mind the raw sound of early releases by MMW. But unfortunately these occasions are rare. On other tracks like "Hope and Destruction," "Deep," "Chita," "Big," and "Strength," Maoz follows Zorn's angular scales and themes, and these tracks could easily have assimilated within the repertoire of Zorn's Bar Kokhba Sextet. Maoz's use of vibrato on these tracks is quite reminiscent of Ribot's guitar work with the Bar Kokhba Sextet.

Each member of the quartet plays spectacularly throughout Edom, but considering the breadth of Masada-related releases and tributes—including the recent fusion incarnation of Rashanim's daring covers of unrecorded Masada songs on Masada Rock (Tzadik, 2005)—I would expect more from Maoz, based on his already proven compositional skills with the Lemon Juice Quartet.

In a (re)return of the prodigious prodigal son, the Israeli-born and New York City-seasoned Omer Avital is back on the block after extended musical fieldwork in his native land. The Ancient Art of Giving presents the vibrant and eclectic bassist with a host of jazz adepts: Mark Turner (tenor), Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Aaron Goldberg (piano) and Ali Jackson (drums), all veterans of and close collaborators in the underground (literally!) scene at Smalls, a "new -breed Mecca under the auspices of the eccentrically avuncular Mitch Borden.

Pressed on the club's in-house label, this disc captures the spirits of the times, rendered through the lens of Avital's decidedly personal artistic aesthetic. Blending the Old World elegance of Spanish classicism with Afro-Arabic modal soul and North American hard-bop, Avital has gleaned a unique sound from these cultural interzones, a sort of "jazz of Gibraltar.

Many of the tunes on the recording employ the descending phrygian cadences associated with Iberian peninsula composers and flamencos (eg. "Homeland, "Ras Abu-Galum and "Shimi's Tune ), along with an ample dose of gospel (thanks to Goldberg's churchy comping) that recalls the Bobby Timmons-era Jazz Messengers.

When simmered in Smalls' subterranean crockpot into the wee hours, these flavors blend in a pungent potpourri, as on "Arrival, where a funky piano intro sets up a two-horn, Blakey-esque head, followed by tandem soloing from Turner and Cohen; or on "Shimi's Tune, where Jackson's rat-a-tat snare drum fusillades sync and swim with Goldberg's facile pianisms. You can just imagine the heads bobbing.

This October, Avital had been in-house at Smalls; on the first Wednesday of the month, he appeared with Cohen (trumpet), Joel Frahm (tenor), Daniel Freedman (drums) and fellow Israeli Omer Klein (piano). The early set featured "Free Forever, "Suite of the East, "Mountain Top, "The Chant and "New Middle East, all well-conceived, memorable tunes with unusual twists and turns that Avital's unmistakable stylistic stamp. Amidst this all-star cast, Klein in particular dazzled with torrents of turbo-charged one-hand "rolls" and tumultuous lyricism.

Get ready for the Kutiman experience. Funk and afro beat are only two shades of Kuti's kaleidoscopic sound. From West Indian grooves and easy listening to rock and soul and even pop there are no barriers. "Music Is Ruling My World", sums it up best ("Half disco, half afro beat and mostly perfect for summer jamming purposes." was "The Fader's verdict on the single). And while Kutiman recorded the bulk of the album all by himself, playing keys, drums, guitar, percussions and bass he also showcases many of his friends and favorite musicians from the scene in Tel Aviv.

I had already listened and enjoyed Abu Nawas Rhapsody and so much waiting for this concert. I Believe that i will not be disappointed. Tunisian singer, dressed in white, sat in the orange light of the preliminary stage while twirling, began the serenade of his young acolyte virtuoso, "a little Mozart Armenian." Then rushed, so powerful, warm voice of Dhafer Youssef. LBS then began an improvisation that concludes, breathless, with a wave of his hand. The atmosphere is already settled: a perfectly nuanced blend of oriental music and jazz. Very conscious of his musicians (there was also onstage bass and drums), singer / oud player gave constantly gaze and took a master hand impalpable multiple digressions which were made around the themes of the album . Featuring a phenomenal vocal range, Tunisian also played with originality and succeeded in creating echoes crystalline using his left palm curved. A full concert, charming and unique on leading the applause of a standing room.

Marcus Miller- Tutu Revisited - Live at Leverkusen (2009)

Miles Davis’ album Tutu, released in 1986 and named for Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, was a landmark recording for the trumpeter. The richly arranged material from that album and its followup Amandla served to define Davis’ sound for the final act in a long career of growth and transformation. Produced by bassist Marcus Miller, who had been a member of Miles’ band when he came out of retirement back in 1980, Tutu is widely recognized as one of the great contemporary jazz records of the ‘80s with a powerful sound and feel that defy categorization.
In this age of tributes and revisiting of older albums, perhaps it’s no surprise that Tutu is being given a second life. And likewise that the man behind the rebirth is the man who was behind the record in the first place. All summer, Marcus Miller will perform “Tutu Revisited,” a concert of Miles Davis material, with a band drawn largely from a new generation, including Christian Scott on trumpet, Alex Han on saxophone, Louis Cato on drums, Frederico Pena on keyboards, and of course Miller on bass (and occasionally bass clarinet).
Miller certainly has the bona fides to pay tribute to the music from Tutu.
His contribution to the record began with the compositions. Although my early CD version strangely doesn’t even provide songwriting credits, the fact is that Miller wrote all but two of the songs (George Duke’s “Backyard Ritual” and Scritti Politti’s “Perfect Way”). He also arranged and produced most of the sessions, though George Duke and Tommy LiPuma were also involved in that capacity and Jason Miles contributed keyboard programming. Miller not only played bass, but also played nearly all of the other instruments. Interestingly, Davis had wanted to collaborate with Prince before working on this album. The vocalist, bassist and songwriter Esperanza Spalding is one of the newest jazz talent, a young woman (24 years old) who likes to delve into other genres and is looking forward to interact with flamenco. the artist said in an appearance before reporters in San Sebastian, after stating her collaboration with flamenco guitarist Nino Josele, that both in studio and live performances has been amazing.
Spalding, one of the highlights of Heineken Jazzaldia 44, has assured that Josele 'is the bomb!,he is the best "and I always learn something every time I played with him.
In Portuguese and Castilian.
Esperanza Spalding on bass came after ten years playing the violin and at the moment, although the latter instrument continues its journey with it, prefer the first because she is able to stream music "natural and easy." "With the violin I have never found the sensations that I have found in the bass. Now I'm trying also the piano. But you have to find time for everything, also for the voice, "she pointed out.

AZURE (pronounced Az U R) was a band formed in 1998 by Stuart Zender (ex-Jamiroquai bassist) and his friend Donny (DON-E). The project was to show off the men's writing skills and Stu's own Producing talents on the Virgin Records Label. Few details at the time had surfaced. Gathering from various publications, the group was to feature a horn section from Cuba, Pino Palladino, and D'Angelo. A single was planned (major worldwide release) for Spring 2000.
And then nothing.
The news stopped and after awhile everyone accepted that something must have gone wrong to sour the deal. Stuart never talked about what happened in publication so most of the details are sketchy. Apparently, Virgin was all for the idea of the AZUR album. They had fan popular (and well respected in the industry) bassist Stuart Zender, a partner for him (Donny), and one of their own artists (D'Angelo) collaberating on the project. Virgin had major plans for a US release of the album, as well as, the rest of the world. Stu was thrilled to put it mildly. The album quickly started working out in weeks what takes most groups months.
So what went wrong? It seems Tyrese did. Virgin's decision to release and promote the Tyrese album seemed to upset Stu. I don't know why or how fully this is true but we know the result. Virgin Records kept sending money to Stuart & Donny for the AZUR project. Virgin already had the first AZUR track in hand to start working as a single but no other material. And so Virgin kept sending money and AZUR kept sending back no word. This little game went on for awhile before Virgin decided to call it quits. Amazingly, neither side has ever stated bad feelings about the project.
And so the album disappeared. until now, of course.

Tracks Review

"Baby I've Got to Know" is your smooth R&B style track. Brings up thoughts of smokey Jazz clubs in Atlanta and relaxing as the beat over takes you. A great vocals/backing vocals track.
"Say I Want You" is another R&B with touches of the urban genre. D'Angelo-ish in many ways. Phat bassline on the track and tight keyboards. Another vocal masterpiece.
"AZUR (As You Are)" is one of the two best songs on this album. Originally set to be the lead single, it owns you from the first beat. This track drags in your urban jungle, funk (and I mean REAL funk -- classic 70s funk masters stuff), and more light dabs of the R&B flavor. Stu is all over the board playing a great bass track and yet he leaves more then enough room for you to enjoy everyone else as equally. An easy 1 anywhere.
"Suddenly" continuing the urban jungle/funk vibes, we travel into a beat track. A couple of these album tracks remind me of the early samples from the original 'Synkronized' album that Stu was on. This is one of them.
"Love is So Cold (feat. D'Angelo)" was originally slated as "My Baby's Eyes" for D'Angelo's Voodoo album. Why he cut it, I'll never know. Standard D'Angelo smooth R&B music. subtle bassline and even lighter drums/percussion.
"Anything to Make It Through" is simply beautiful. The album flows well track to track meeting back in the world of R&B. Stunning guitars & keys. All the tracks have a great group of singers and this one still leaves me speechless.
"Always Seem To Remind Me" takes us back up to that "AZUR" track vibe. Urban, R&B, and funk rule your world. Drums & percussion. Not light but slightly under is keys, guitar & bass but still well represented.
"Get to Heaven" crosses back into your urban jungle material. Some of it sounds M-Beat-ish but all original. Beat people would eat this track up.
"Sunshine" mixes your urban back in with R&B. Hard to describe in words. God I wish I had a sample because it flows well as a beat track. Vocals are really tight here.
"Picture in My Heart" is classic Stu playing with your mind. R&B mainly but Stu rules the track in such a quiet matter. Wicked horn section in here. Good flow of guitar and beats. The only annoying thing is that the track just stops. Probably never got to be finished before the project was ended.

Here is something I have been looking forward to for a very long time, the Shpongle remixed album from Twisted! Twisted Records never keeps their promises when it comes to release dates, but we always forgive them because they are the best… This album should have been released in 2002, but finally it’s here. After two fantastic Shpongle albums, they have decided to let some other artists play with their tracks. An album with eight Shpongle tracks, remixed by eight different groups.

First of all I have to say that the cover art is really nice, with the Shpongle mask over a little lake with forest around it. First out is a remix of the Crystal Skulls track released on The Secret Of The Thirteen Crystal Skulls compilation (TIP.World 2002). Here we get a remix by Western Rebel Alliance who has released several tracks on Flying Rhino Records. It’s very different from the original, but you easily hear a lot of the Shpongle ingredients in there. This version has some drum ‘n’ bass rhythms and a much more jazzy vibe. Very beautiful all the way. Western Rebel Alliance is absolutely something to check out. Track 2 is a remix of And The Day Turned To Night, originally released on Are You Shpongled? (Twisted Records 1998). This track is remixed by the well known Eat Static group. Eat Static are veterans in psychedelic electronic music. The version they give us here is pretty typical Eat Static (if you look at their latest albums). Industrial hard banging drum ‘n’ bass rhythms, with all the Shpongled sounds and melodies twisted inside. Sounds great, if you like Eat Static.

Then comes the weirdest track on this album. It is Star Shpongled Banner originally released on Tales Of The Inexpressible (Twisted Records 2001). Those who have got the honour to remix this are Brothomstates from Finland. They are probably not very known in the psytrance scene, but they have released an album on Warp Records. They give us an electro (!) version of this track. Very different from the original. Probably the most remixed track on this album. I have always enjoyed Warp releases, but this might sound too strange for many in the psy scene. I think it sounds cool. Then comes one of my favourite Shpongle tracks, A New Way To Say Hooray (first released on Tales Of The Inexpressible). Prometheus (Benji Vaughan) has remixed it, and he sure knows how to make a remix interesting. He will be releasing his debut Prometheus album on Twisted Records soon. After the fantastic Younger Brother album he released with Simon Posford earlier this year, he sure has proved to be a big talent. The remix he gives us is much more trancey than the original, with stumpy rhythms, going in a danceable way, but not very fast. Great remix! My Head Feels Like A Frisbee (from Tales Of The Inexpressible) made people go latino dancing on the chill out floors when it was released. Here we get a remix by Delusions Of Grandeur. It still has the latino vibe, but it goes in a housy tempo. I prefer the original… Then comes the Dorset Perception track remixed by Total Eclipse. This remix is actually already released on another Twisted compilation (Unusual Suspects, Twisted 2002) It’s a great track. Typical Total Eclipse going in a down tempo way, with Total Eclipse melodies mixed with Shpongle… Great track! Ott is probably the most spoken about artist in the chill out/dub genre the last year, after releasing Hallucinogen In Dub (Hallucinogen tracks remixed by Ott) last year and his debut album Blumenkraft on Twisted Records earlier this year. Here he has remixed Around The World In A Tea Daze. Typical Ott, with floating melodies and sounds above deep dub rhythms. Totally relaxing and very beautiful. The last track on this remix album is Once Upon The Sea Of Blissful Awareness. This is remixed by Esionjim (Jim Wood) who has released several tracks on the Backroom Beats label (Twisted chilled side label). He has added some organic instruments and floating sounds, which makes it very beautiful. A relaxing finish.

Shpongle sure has had some great artists to remix their tracks. Very interesting to hear remixes by groups like that who usually makes very different music from Shpongle. I think I had expected some trance versions in this album, but I really enjoyed the way they have gotten electro, dub, drum ‘n’ bass and down tempo trance into one album. Recommended! (As always when it comes to Twisted releases)
